Förmodat gudatempel från tidig Vikingatid i Norge anses vara första som påträffats i landet
I norska Ørsta har arkeologer påträffat en för landet hittills unik byggnadskonstruktion som dateras till 800-talet, tidig Vikingatid. Byggnaden har varit 14×7 meter stor och att döma av stolphålen har den även haft en central tornliknande takkonstruktion. Då byggnaden påminner om erkända så kallade kulthus i bland annat svenska Uppåkra och danska Tissø tolkar arkeologerna byggnaden som en form av tempel.
Utöver den särskilda byggnaden i Ørsta har man påträffat rester efter eld och matberedning i anslutning till det förmodade templet, vilka av arkeologerna tolkas som spår efter rituella måltider på platsen. Dock, på grund av avsaknad av fynd med kultisk koppling som påträffats vid både Uppåkra och Tissø, manar en del forskare fortfarande till försiktighet i tolkningen av den nyupptäckta byggnaden. Säkert är däremot att byggnaden är det första i sitt slag som påträffats i Norge.

?? In Norwegian Ørsta, archaeologists have recently found a building unique to the country and dating to the 9th century, early Viking age. The building used to be 14×7 metres large and judging by the post holes, a central tower-like construction used to crown the roof. Because of the building’s close resemblance to other ritual buildings from the same period, for example in Swedish Uppåkra and Danish Tissø, archaeologists has interpret the building as a form of temple.
In addition to the special building in Ørsta, remains of fire and food preparation have been found in connection to the supposed temple, which have been interpreted as traces of ritual meals having been cooked on site. However, due to the lack of finds with cultic connection, such as has been found at both Uppåkra and Tissø, some researchers still urge caution in the interpretation of the newly discovered building. It is certain, however, that the building is the first of its kind to be found in Norway.
