Depåfynd av folkvandringstida brakteater i Norge
Efter att en privatperson påträffat fem brakteater i norska Østfold utförde arkeologer en mindre utgrävning på platsen och nu har sammanlagt 7 guldbrakteater som dateras till 500-talet påträffats. Att döma av föremålens placeringar har de förmodligen utgjort ett samlat så kallat depåfynd, en medveten nedläggning under vad arkeologerna traditionellt tolkar som en period av social oro under 500-talet e.kr.
Guldbrakteater återfinns endast i folkvandringstida kontexter och förknippas ofta med de militära nätverken som var utspridda över Europa, inklusive Skandinavien, under och efter Romarrikets fall. Motiven uppvisar viss likhet med kejsarmynt slagna runt om i imperiet men utvecklades alltjämt i en egen, distinkt stil bestående av djur- och människomotiv.

After a private individual found five bracteates in Østfold, Norway, archaeologists carried out a small excavation at the site and now a total of 7 gold bracteates, dating to the 6th century AD have been found. Judging by the placements of the objects, they most likely constituted a so-called hoard, a deliberate deposition during what archaeologists traditionally interpret as a period of social unrest during the 6th century AD.
Gold bracteates are only found in contexts belonging to the Migration period and are often associated with the military networks which were spread across Europe, including Scandinavia, during and after the fall of the Roman empire. The motifs show slight resemblance to imperial coins struck at various places within the Roman empire, but were eventually developed their own, distinct style consisting of animal and human motifs.
